Let's Get Started On Your First Project

Thank you for supporting mcThings™! We are excited that you're now ready to use your devices and the mcThings platform to measure and control almost any type of data! Now that you've received your devices, there are a couple house-keeping items we need to cover which are broken down in the 3 steps below.

Step 1:
Update

Ensure That All Your Device Firmware Is Up-To-Date

We are constantly striving to update and modify our platform! Because of this, it is possible that a new firmware release has been issued for your devices between your shipment and arrival dates. Please ensure that you are up-to-date with the most recent version of firmware available for your mcModules and mcGateways!

Instructions:

  • Download the mcOTA application from our downloads page (under the “mc-Module” heading). mcOTA is the application used with the mcDongle to update firmware on mcModules and mcDevices, as well as the host processor on the mcGateway.

  • Read the mcOTA quick start guide (.pdf) found on our downloads page (underneath the mcOTA application download) and follow the step-by-step instructions in order to update the firmware on your modules and gateways. If you’re a visual learner, we also have an instructional video on how to update the firmware on an mcMod 120 (link below).

Step 2:
Program

Start Programming your Devices With mcStudio & mcScript

Using the mcStudio software application and the mcScript programming language (similar to Visual Basic) you can begin programming your mcModules and mcDevices out of the box.  Please ensure that you are running the latest version of mcStudio and understand the basics of object oriented programming in order to start creating and loading scripts on to your devices.

Instructions:

  • Download the latest version of the mcStudio software application from our downloads page and watch the mcStudio introduction video through our YouTube channel.

  • Read the mcScript user guide to familiarize yourself with this object oriented programming language used to program your modules and devices. In addition to this, we also recommend that you check out the mcMod120 technical spec sheet for project examples and technical details for using the mcModules.
